Communication: Invented
The most important technological benefit to society is the telephone. Because of the telephone, communication was allowed while not not requiring a face-to-face conversation. Telephones made it possible to send long distance messages without the need of a paper and pen. After the telephone, the mobile phone, or cell phone, made communication even easier. The cell phone was able to go just about anywhere and still had the ability to make calls. From the cell phones, smartphones were invented. Smartphones were cell phones, but with the ability of having a mobile computer at your fingertips. While the telephone advances, it provides new ways for people to become more technologically advanced.
The telephone was invented in the 1870’s by two inventors, Alexander Bell and Elisha Gray, each with their own design. Elisha patented his idea before Alexander, but the credibility still remained with him. Alexander Bell invented the telephone while trying to improve the telegram. The telegram was the first electrical transmitting device used for communication. The telegram was only able to transmit one message at a time, while the telephone could transmit multiple messages. Multiple messages allowed voices to be transferred from one telephone to another. Telephones enabled people to have conversations while talking, rather than tapping and translating, as needed for the telegram. This technological breakthrough allowed people to easily communicate with each other, while mobile phones made communication easy on the go.

Popular today among teenagers, businesspeople and the common person are cell phones, once known as mobile phones. Mobile phones are inside vehicles such as taxicabs and trucks. They are used to communcate between the vehicles and do not allow communication to land lines. The mobile phone led to the development of the cell phone. The first cell phone was completely mobile and allowed transmissions from just about anywhere. Even though the first cell phones were very large and pricy, they set the base for many technological advancements. Second generation cell phones allowed a greater mobility at a cheaper price. Greater mobility allowed the cell phone to become more popular. Even though cell phones were techonogically advanced, recently the smart phone took its role.

Smartphones are the greatest technological advancement of the telphone today. They are like cell phones, but with the ability of having an operating system at your fingertips. Third generation technology shows the advancement of design and style. The smartphone not only allows voice transfer, but also web access, email, and instant messaging. Because the ability to access the internet is so easy, smartphones are perfect for a person on the go. The mobility of the smartphone allows someone with no time between meetings to go home, check their schedule, or call a friend. Some smartphones include, the Apple iPhone, the Sprint Instinct, and the Blackberry Storm. Smartphones show how far the telephone has advanced since Bell.

Indeed, the telephone is the greatest technological advancement to benefit society. Communication was simplified and expanded. The cell phone created a way for people to communicate while not being at home. Smartphones allow us to access the internet in any environment today. The telephone has come a long way since Alexander Bell was trying to improve the telegram. Many inventors are at work trying to better technology and the ways it is used. Technology continues to benefit and allow society to communicate. At the rate of development in society today cell phones will soon reach the fourth generation.
